If you’re only able to attend a few meetings a year, this is the speaker you don’t want to miss. One of Mr. Kaplan's enduring legacies was his ability to bring public attention to community safety issues by attracting Hollywood celebrities and star athletes to become safety advocates. By working with many of the leading entertainers of the day, Mr. Kaplan assembled am impressive roster of safety ambassadors and attracted the attention of the press, the public and policy-makers. Mr. Kaplan's tireless efforts in working with the media to advocate safety issues both in front of the camera and behind it made him something of a news icon in southern California. He also was a pioneer in making safety education films widely available to the public. The Los Angeles Chapter of was one of the first National Safety Council chapters to develop its own safety training programs for business and industry. Mr. Kaplan also managed the Council's own safety trade show, the largest regional safety show in the US for more then 40 years. In the 1980s, Mr. Kaplan led the "Buckle Up for Life Challenge" in southern California that raised awareness of the value of seat belts. This was one of the first community seat belt awareness initiatives and was the forerunner of many community and national seat belt programs that followed. Mr. Kaplan and ASSE LA: Mr. Kaplan's community safety leadership has extended beyond the National Safety Council. He was a charter member, in 1946, of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers. He has remained active in the Chapter to this day.
